Well, another year, another LEGO game. Sometimes I wonder if I should just stop reviewing them, since they are basically becoming the same game with nothing new or exciting about them. Not to say the games are terrible, because they aren’t. They are easy to get into, have good senses of humor, and can be fun. I just think the recent entries are showing the games’ age, since they all basically play the same. So, where does LEGO Marvel Avengers stand? Well, pretty much the same as the last couple of games in the franchise. It’s a good game, but nothing amazing.

The story really doesn’t need much focus, since it basically covers Iron Man 3, Thor: Dark World, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron. There is some future DLC that will tackle Ant Man, but really, if it’s anything like the films not labeled The Avengers, then I won’t hold my breath. The main story hits all the beats and important/memorable sequences of all of the movies, and sometimes puts a humorous spin on them. The other films included in the game don’t really get big cutscenes, and instead get comic book-style cutscenes.

If for some reason, you have not played any of the games in the franchise from 2012 to now, LEGO Marvel Avengers is an action-oriented platformer and puzzle game. You will control a set of Marvel heroes as you progress through the levels, fighting enemies, taking down the occasional boss, and solving puzzles in the same LEGO-style that you are all familiar with. Every hero has his or her own abilities, like the Hulk can carry huge objects that have green handles, Quicksilver can run up special ramps, Iron Man can destroy silver and gold bricks, and Thor can charge up certain machines with his powers. The only new gameplay gimmick that they introduce is this team-up mechanic where two of the heroes can pair up and do a screen-clearing attack. Unlike the previous Marvel game, Marvel Avengers doesn’t have a single open world to explore, but instead smaller open-ended areas. The main story will just follow the two Avengers films, where you need to travel and manually choose to play levels from the other films in the franchise. If it seems like I am glancing over everything, it’s because the same design process has been in every single LEGO game for years now. It shouldn’t be surprising. It’s a game that will take about eight or so hours to complete, and the game has multiple characters to unlock that will play similarly to other characters that you can use in other levels. Oh, and expect a season pass with additional levels that will probably play the same.

Graphically, it’s a LEGO game. It looks nice for what it is, even though the real rocks and water don’t match the LEGO bricks. The music and voice acting is ripped right from the movies, and yes, they do use voice doubles at times. Sometimes they bring in actors for new lines, but not often.

So, yeah, what can I say that hasn’t been said about the past five or so LEGO games that won’t be repetitive here? Its gameplay gets tiring, the voice work that was ripped from the movies don’t mix well, and the game is just a retread of past games. The problems the past games had, are the same ones this game has.  I think it’s an inferior sequel to the last LEGO Marvel game, Marvel Superheroes.  I just don’t get why Traveler’s Tales can’t do what they want with the intellectual properties. It’s why LEGO Marvel Superheroes was so good. It wasn’t limited by the movies. Heck, Marvel Avengers probably shoehorned the other Marvel films into the game because the game would have been shorter than what it was in the final product. Why not just make a Marvel Superheroes 2? I know the game teased a Guardians of the Galaxy game, and there was the recent announcement of LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but I just find myself losing steam in terms of finding enjoyment and positive things to say about the games Traveler’s Tales makes. I know it’s not their fault, and are probably at the whim of the publishers that hire them to make the new LEGO –insert movie/licensed property here-, but it wouldn’t kill them to make something new and refreshing with the LEGO brand.

I know I’m harsh on this franchise now, and while I do think Traveler’s Tales needs to start rebooting or at least making the experience fresh again, LEGO Marvel Avengers is solid. I think it’s better than LEGO The Hobbit and LEGO Jurassic World, but that isn’t saying much in terms of how good LEGO City Undercover and LEGO Marvel Superheroes were. If you loved the last Marvel-based LEGO game, then I would recommend picking this up, since no matter how boring and tiring these games get, they will still be better than most big budget triple-A games released this year.

This game gets a 6 out of 10
